About Mesa Winds Farm ...
Our 36 acre farm is a few miles outside Hotchkiss, Colorado. At Mesa Winds Farm we produce USDA Certified Organic peaches, apples, grapes, raspberries, asparagus, vegetables and honey. Our certification is current and includes all our crops.
... a Colorado sustainable farm
Dr John Ikerd, a highly regarded ag economist defines sustainability:
- "The New American Farmer stewards the land, preserves and improves
the soil."
This year we've added sheep and geese to our farm to increase fertility, weed, and mow. We can make our farm more sustainable with less off-farm inputs. - "(S)he treats workers and the community alike with respect, kindness,
and equitably."
College students are our main summer hires. We provide room, board and stipend as we train and encourage these young farmers in a sustainable model. We also hire local ag workers and provide year round housing for one additional family on our farm. Each year we donate significant quanitites of our fruit to the Western Colorado Food and Ag Council which supports a local food bank. - "Makes economic decisions that produce reasonable profits that sustain the farm,
farmer, and employees."
We are trying new ways to bring our produce to the market. Read how on our Direct Sales page. We are also creating new ventures, like our Three Forks Tour that will add value to our farm. - "The New American Farmer builds a relationship with the new American eater."
The New American Eater understands that by supporting local farmers they are supporting rural communities and the health of the society to which they belong.
We hope that you will be able to participate in the 2010 MWF season, and enjoy the certified organic peaches, apples, table grapes, other foods and farm stays that we offer our customers. - W
