Fall has arrived

October

Autumn went by very fast as we settled into our new home, did our best to repair the most egregiously neglected items, and prepared Badger cabin and the farm for winter.

We have a couple of old cottonwoods at the corner of our property.
There's plenty of dramatic possibilities. These units were built more than 30 years ago and needed plumbing repairs, heating upgrades, paint and cosmetics too. Wink's skills at mudding, carpentry, demo and energy efficiency applications came in handy — Max's painting and color expertise added the frosting. "Who can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear?" as the Kansas adage goes. But the buildings are simply made and in solid for what they are.

The grapes were our first priority. These were two and three year-old plants that had been planted and subsequently ignored — except for Salvador's irrigation. In our optimism we had, early in the summer, pruned and staked all 1000 plants expecting to get them trellised and trained in due time. We managed to install all the end posts and a couple of rows of a fit of unrealistic optimism.

Autumn highlights include a low fly-over by Sand Hill Cranes, firewood cutting of the first (of 4) enormous pile of apple tree carcasses with the gang from Jack Rabbit Hill winery.
